Bathroom Renovations 101: Running New Pipes

When I decided to add a pedestal sink and claw foot tub to my bathroom, I had no idea how much new plumbing I had to run. Since I had never run pipes before, I wasn't sure how to do it properly. I did a lot of research before I started so that I could be sure that I was doing it right. As I was researching, I knew that it would be helpful to have all of the information I found in one place. That was the inspiration for this site. I hope that the plumbing resources help you with your next home improvement project.

Plumbing Services: 4 Common Causes Of A Blocked Drain

Clogged drains can wreak havoc in a building if left unchecked. They can cause pipe corrosion, sewage backup, and flooding. For that reason, you should give your drainage system utmost care and caution to avoid blockages. That includes checking what you are putting into the drain. Remember that you lower the system's overall maintenance and repair costs when you take the correct preventative measures. Moreover, you maintain your home in a clean and healthy state.

Learning what causes clogged drains is the first step in keeping your plumbing in the best condition possible. Here are the four common things that are highly likely to block your drainage system:

1. Hair and Make-up Products

Hair might seem unlikely to block a drainage system, but it is a significant contributor to clogged drains. It combines with other make-up products used in the bathroom, such as oils and creams, to form clogs. Other products that can quickly clog the drains include cosmetic wipes, sanitary towels, and tampons.

When hair drops on the shower floor, collect it immediately before it goes down with the water. You can install drain guards to trap hair and other substances. But remember to clean the guards as well, to allow unrestricted water flow.

2. Tree Root Intrusions

The condition of your outdoor drainage system highly determines its effectiveness. Small leaks and cracks provide room for root ingress, encouraging tree roots to grow in the plumbing system. Subsequently, the roots interrupt water flow and may eventually cause the pipes to burst.

The best way to tackle root intrusions is through a professional CCTV drain survey. A drain survey entails introducing a camera into the drainage system to get a picture of the internal state of your drainage system. That way, you will detect root intrusion early enough and take the necessary steps before the growing roots burst out the pipes.

3. Food Debris from the Kitchen Sink

Forcing food remnants down the plughole leads to clogged drains. Scrap leftovers off the plates before doing dishes in the sink to prevent a blockage. To minimize grease build-up in the pipes, wipe off grease and oil from the dishes using kitchen tissue before cleaning them.

4. Toilet Paper Buildup

Excessive use of toilet paper can easily block your drainage system. If possible, you can use a plunger to unblock the toilet. But if that does not work, call in a plumber for professional help. Avoid using paper towels in the toilet in place of toilet paper, as they are major culprits in clogging drains.

When you have a sewage backup, unpleasant odour, slow-draining water, and noises in the drainage system, you certainly have clogged drains. Call in a professional plumber immediately to remedy the situation before it worsens.
